From End-of-Life to New Growth: Inside Our Partnership with One Tree Planted

You’re not going to believe this, but chocolate was invented over five thousand years ago. Now, what makes this interesting is that peanut butter wasn’t invented until 1884. Yet, it wasn’t until 1964 for an Ohio woman named Gail Tabor thought to combine the two.

Some things just work well together, like chocolate and peanut butter. Frankly, that’s what our partnership with One Tree Planted feels like. As a global nonprofit dedicated to restoring forests, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening ecosystems around the world, our efforts combine to ensure that not only will we decommission America’s aging solar systems gracefully, we will invest in reforestation efforts with every successful project we do.

This collaboration represents a natural extension of the work we do every day, and a deeper commitment to the future we’re helping build.

Extending the Promise of Solar

Every solar installation begins with a promise: a cleaner, more sustainable world.

But, as early generations of solar infrastructure begin to reach end-of-life, our industry faces a defining question:

Will those systems fulfill that promise or quietly undermine it?

At Decom Solar, we’ve built our company around answering that question the right way. We approach every decommissioned system not as waste, but as opportunity:

  • To recover valuable materials like silicon, aluminum, copper, and glass
  • To reintroduce those materials into the manufacturing stream
  • To extend the life of usable equipment through donation and reuse

Because sustainability only works when we take responsibility for the full lifecycle, not just the beginning. Plus, each of our decommissioning projects also contribute to reforestation thanks to our work with One Tree Planted!

Where Reforestation Fits In

Our partnership with One Tree Planted is rooted in a simple belief:

  1. Clean energy reduces emissions, and
  2. Reforestation removes carbon already in the atmosphere.

We need both.

By supporting global reforestation efforts, we’re taking our commitment one step further. We’re not just reducing harm, but actively contributing to the restoration of the natural systems that make all life possible.

We make a financial investment to One Tree Planted to expand their tree planting efforts with every Decom Solar decommissioning project. Tree planting helps:

  • Rebuild ecosystems and biodiversity
  • Improve soil and water health
  • Strengthen the environments surrounding solar developments
  • Create long-term carbon sequestration

It’s a powerful reminder that technology alone isn’t enough. Nature has always been, and will continue to be, our greatest ally.

A Broader Definition of Responsibility

From day one, Decom Solar has operated with a clear philosophy: clean energy should leave more good behind than it takes.

That belief shows up in everything we do:

  • Diverting solar materials from landfills through recovery and recycling
  • Donating functional modules to underserved communities to expand access to electricity
  • Supporting environmental initiatives that restore and protect the planet

This partnership is a continuation of that work. It’s an acknowledgment that true sustainability requires both innovation in the decommissioning process and restoration efforts like those championed by One Tree Planted.

Building What Comes Next

We’re entering a new chapter in the clean energy movement and we’re proud to do that in lock step with One Tree Planted.

The first wave of solar was about adoption and getting renewable energy online. The next wave of solar is about accountability and what we do with it over time.

We’re committed to leading ethical decommissioning of Americas solar systems and taking it one step further with regeneration.

Our partnership with One Tree Planted reflects that evolution. It’s about closing loops, restoring balance, and ensuring that the systems we build today contribute to a healthier planet tomorrow.

We’re proud to be long-time supporters of One Tree Planted and grateful to be this year’s Earth Month Sponsor.
